Why AAU Honoured Dr. Onolememen, Others

Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has honoured and inducted several dignitaries into its Hall of Fame, as part of the activities to mark its 40th anniversary.

Among those who were honoured and inducted were Dr. Mike Onolememen CON, the Adolor of Uromi and the former Minister of Works. Others included the business mogul and oil magnate, Leemon Ikpea who was represented by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu; Elder Pius Omofuma, the founder of GT Plaza; Hon. Iyoha Osaigbovo, the Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; Elumelu, who is an alumnus of the university and a host of others.

In his address, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Benson Osadolor, said the award and induction into the school’s Hall of Fame were “to celebrate persons who in several ways has impacted the development of the university.

Dr. Mike Onolememen, in receiving his award, appreciated the Acting Vice Chancellor and organizers of the ceremony for finding him worthy to be nominated into the school’s Hall of Fame.

He said it was a great homecoming for him where he started the 1981/1982 academic session.

The former Minister said: “Looking back, “I am proud to say that the grooming I had here as a pioneer student prepared me for the gargantuan tasks I have had to face in the real world, within and outside of Nigeria; whether in the private sector where I have practiced as as a registered/chartered Architect for more than three decades, or in the public sector for close to two decades.

“I am glad to say that as the first registered/chartered Architect from AAU, I gave a good impression of AAU wherever fate took me in these past 30 years.

“More importantly, in the public sector where the common good of all is the guiding principle, AAU prepared me in excelling in the various public offices I occupied at different times, as Executive Director of projects at the Petroleum Trust Fund (2000); Minister of State for Defence (2007), and Minister of Works (2011-2015).”

Dr Onolememen further concluded and promised that: “My induction today into the AAU Hall of Fame calls for more dedication, and the glory be to God. As the saying goes, to whom much is given, much is expected. I recognize that today’s induction is also a call to give back to the institution that prepared me for the World.

“In that regard, I shall embark on the Rehabilitation, and renewal of the AAU Architectural Studio and Library as a way to give back to the department of Architecture at AAU, where the dream truly began.”
